Itineraries
Take this excursion from Shiraz. Raise early in the morning, meet your guide at 8:30 at your hotel or any other convenient location and drive towards the south of Fars (145 km). The ancient Bishapur, meaning the city of Shapur, the Sassanid king, was first established in 266 AD by Shapur I, the second Sassanid king. He vanquieshed Roman invaders and ordered them to construct the dazzling Bishapur City, including the water temple called the Anahita Temple, the ceremonial hall and the mosaic hall, influenced by Achaemenid and Roman art. After visiting this ancient city you’ll visit the bass reliefs of Tang-e Chogan, carved into rocks in the river gorge and depicting the triumph of the king over the Romans. From here you can climb the mountain for about 2 hours and reach the Shapur Cave to see the Shapur statue or you can drive back and arrive in Shiraz in the evening.
