As mentioned in our previous blog about Zein-O-Din Caravanserai, the historic caravanserais are important elements of Iranian architecture and a big number of these monuments are spread in this country especially around Yazd and Isfahan, and since caravanserais were places for travelers’ accommodation after day’s adventurous journey and also a place for cultural interactions, they are wonderful places with too many stories and so worth visiting for the travelers visiting Iran.

Maranjab Caravanserai

Being located in the north of Aran o Bidgol town and 62 kilometers away from Kashan, Maranjab Desert is one of the most amazing deserts in Isfahan Province with natural and historical attractions, the most important of which is the Maranjab Caravanserai, located between the Salt Lake and endless sand dunes creating a mind-blowing landscape.

History of Maranjab Caravanserai

The Maranajb Caravanserai was built beside a freshwater fountain and Qanat, by the order of Shah Abbas in 1012 AH, as one of the 999 caravanserais built during the glorious Safavid Dynasty on busy roads like the ancient Silk Road. This caravanserai was used as a roadside inn for travelers and also as a watchtower to provide safety on Isfahan – Mashhad Road. After being damaged and abandoned for years, the Maranjab Caravanserai was restored in 1999 by the order of the Iranian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism.

Maranjab Caravanserai architecture

Maranjab caravanserai is a large square-shaped building made with brick. This courtyard is surrounded by 29 rooms that are reachable by a few stairs. This caravanserai is equipped with 6 brick watchtowers and a long corridor around the rooms which was used as a stable for keeping the horses and mules. The only architectural ornament of this construction is the brick-made arches used as the entrance of the rooms.
